Understanding How Tooth Damage Occurs

Thanks to better prophylaxis and education, decay is no longer the biggest problem in dentistry. Because of today’s life circumstances, tooth erosion is much more common, which means the degradation of tooth enamel. Fruit juices, sodas, and sweets are consumed way too much, especially for small and teenage children.

The damage goes down to the tooth root, meaning that the items listed above break down the enamel. Because of this, dentists state that routine dental care has never been more important than it is today.

Dental damage to be aware of

Even the wrong dental care habits or medications cause the breakdown of tooth enamel. Since teeth cannot improve itself naturally, they remain damaged. Unlike decay, erosion is not due to the involvement of bacteria.

Decay can also be due to other physical factors such as increased production of stomach acid, bulimia, anorexia, gastrointestinal diseases, and frequent vomiting.


Often times, the erosion of the enamel is detected too late. In the initial stage, it slowly softens without the patient knowing. If a tooth appears silky and dull, this could be the first sign of tooth decay. In the second stage, rough edging on the tooth become noticeable and increasingly yellowish. At this point, only the dentin shimmers through.

In the third and last stage, there are signs of dental degradation once the patient consumes cold and hot foods and drinks. Another clear sign is when dental fillings protrude beyond the edge of the tooth.

Treatment and prevention

People should check their eating habits and possibly change them completely. When it comes to soft drinks, fruit juices, and sports drinks, people should pay attention to each one’s ingredients. Most of these have high percentages of phosphate and calcium. Sugarless chewing gum stimulates salivation, neutralizing the acid, thus protecting the teeth.

By properly brushing and flossing, people can avoid dental erosion. Using small circular movements, a soft toothbrush, and the right toothpaste, people can avoid aggravating the situation further. Certain foods such as cheese, milk and calcium-containing products reduce the acidity in the mouth.

Of course, an annual check-up at the dentist is required. This will help people detect damage in time because, once damage has occurred, the tooth cannot be restored to its original state again.
